As they said, totally a real singer using (I presume) motion capture + AR along with her fill-in avatar. Hololive is an agency for vtubers and has a stronger slant toward music than most other vtuber agencies. Several talents like Suisei, Watame, Calliope, Okayu, AZKi, Sora, IRyS, etc all have an album worth of music or more while a number of other talents have 1~6ish original songs. There is a whole lot of talent in the group and we’re happy Suisei got the chance to do this and break through a bit of stigma that vtubers have and show people that they are serious artists! I definitely recommend checking out more from Suisei or some of the others like Watame (“My Song” is lovely) Okayu or any of the others.
Suisei is VERY real. Its just that her vtuber avatar was layered over the singer to protect her anonymity.

Hololive and other companies have Vtubers all around the world. I would say it started in Japan and is championed by Japan but it is worldwide now. Canada, US, Austria, Indonesia, Australia, etc.
Suisei is a VTuber from the HoloLive company. They have many great singers and songs you may enjoy.

As others have said, Suisei is a real singer by the name of Hoshimachi Suisei who was there singing during filming. Vtubers use motion tracking and, in the case of 3D situations like this, motion capture to bring an illustrated character to life in real-time. Suisei has used this same type of 3D model to perform live concerts, some of which have been in front of live audiences. In fact, her new album, “Specter”, released yesterday and this weekend she will be doing a live 3D concert for a live audience in Japan using this exact character model. In the case of Suisei and all of the Hololive members, the person you hear doing the vocal is also the person doing the motion tracking for the model. They’re an incredibly talented group of artists that are very much worth checking out. The awesome thing about Vtubers, however, is if you have someone that is a great singer but may not be able to necessarily move well enough for dancing and whatnot, they can still put on a performance like this. Ironmouse from VShojo (another Vtuber agency like Hololive) recently did a full 3D concert providing the vocals for her character despite having a chronic illness that keeps her largely bedridden (though she’s making a lot of progress to regain her strength as of late). Being a Vtuber allows people to present themselves how they want to be presented to the world and it’s a very freeing experience. Many people that have become Vtubers have been able to achieve their dreams of being singers, dancers, and other types of artists, entertainers, and content creators that they likely would never have been able to have done otherwise if they’d had to put themselves on camera. Suisei herself is evidence of this given that when she first started out, she was trying to break into the Japanese idol business and saw nothing but rejection. Eventually, she decided to create her own 2-dimensional Vtuber avatar, illustrating and animation rigging it herself, to become an independent Vtuber. She was eventually signed by the Hololive talent agency’s now-defunct music label, INNK Music, in 2019 before being transferred to the main Hololive branch later that year and now has two full albums to her name and has done many live 3D concert performances.
